Lung transplant patient helps others facing same fate

By ALYCIA AMBROZIAK, The Gazette, September 15, 2011

A double-lung transplant may have knocked Ian Alexander down for a while, but the Lachine resident has found yet another goal in life: to raise funds to help others diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, the disease that almost felled him.

And that's why Alexander will be on the greens at the Ste. Rose Golf Club in Laval on Sept. 22 as golf committee chairman of the fourth annual E-Challenge golf tournament.

"The E-Challenge objective is to raise funds for patients stricken by IPF, a lung disorder characterized by progressive scarring, robbing victims of their ability to breathe - patients who desperately need financial support in order to get a lung transplant," said Alexander. "I know what it's like."

Ernie Gillispie might not understand the elaborate mechanics that got his body strong enough to withstand a double-lung transplant. They delight him nonetheless.

Gillispie could walk only a few feet in February. Now, the former coal miner and black lung sufferer from Pike County, who was thought too sick to be placed on the transplant list, can walk two miles at a time.

Our Mission

The Alexander Family Foundation (TAFF) was created in the summer of 2008 with little planning or pre-meditation. We did it to help save the life of a loved-one knowing that more good would grow out of this first action.

Today, TAFF’s mission is clear. We are here to help save patients stricken with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) – one patient at a time. IPF is an unrelenting yet little-publicized respiratory disease that is responsible for more deaths than breast cancer every year.

The character of our foundation is unique and has been shaped from the patients we serve to all those involved in the cause. The courage shown by our patients in the face of death, the compassion shown by TAFF and its team in helping our patients, and the incredible network of friendships that exists between all supporting this cause – from our donors to our partners – is what we’re all about.

Thanks for coming to visit our site to understand more about IPF and our foundation!
